6 Tips to Check before Calling for Furnace Repair

Fall is upon us and winter on the way. While you might be in denial about the change in season, there are some things you don’t want to put off, like furnace repair in San Jose, CA. However, before you call for a technician, here are some things you can check that might save you time, money, and hassle.   

1. Make Sure Power and Gas are On 

We do get a couple of calls every year where a technician shows up and the house doesn’t have power or the gas meter isn’t turned on. On occasion, someone moves into a house during the summer and doesn’t need heat, so they forget to call for gas service. Or it might simply be a power outage causing the problems. To avoid an embarrassing service call, make sure both the power and gas to your home are turned on.   

2. Test the Circuit Breaker

Another common problem is accidentally tripping the breaker. So before calling for a furnace technician, check the breaker box. If the HVAC system has tripped the breaker, reset it. 3. Check the Batteries

Some thermostats still operate on batteries, even if they are also wired to the home. If the rest of your house has power, but the display on your thermostat is out, check the batteries. It is a simple solution you don’t want to end up paying a technician to repair. You also want to check to make sure the settings on the thermostat are correct.   

4. Check Vents, Duct, and Grills

The vents are a sensitive component. If a blockage occurs it can cause irregular air flow and shut down your unit. So check the ducts, grills, and vents for any blockages. Plants, furniture, and obstructions should be at least two feet away from your vents.   

5. Check the Air Filters

When was the last time you changed out the air filters? If it has been more than a couple of months you should check them. Irregular heating and cooling could be a direct result of clogged filters. Also note that bets, carpets, and living in a construction zone will clog your filters faster. So mark your calendars and don’t forget to check them.   

6. Remove Obstructions from the Outside Unit

The outdoor unit is the central point for airflow for both heating and air conditioning. Any debris can suffocate the unit. So go out and check for leaves, branches, and garbage that might be sucked onto the surface. You should also try to keep a three-foot radius around the unit clear of plants and obstructions for healthy air flow.
